Many people online say plastic recycling is a lie or a scam. From our experience in this industry, that statement doesn’t match reality.

Is Plastic Recycling Profitable?

Over a decade ago, plastic recycling began to grow rapidly. Today, the early entrants in this field are running stable and profitable operations. With improved sorting technology and better processing systems, recycled plastics are now used in far more products than before. At the same time, governments worldwide continue to support resource recovery and circular manufacturing.

In daily operations, we see that most post-consumer plastics are being sorted and resold. Even plastic films separated from waste paper in paper mills are sold at considerable prices. In many regions, plastic processors still struggle to secure enough raw material. That is the current market reality — supply is tight, not worthless.

Turning Waste Plastic into Pallets

One of the most practical applications of recycled plastic is pallet production.

Recycled plastic pallets can handle dynamic loads of 500 kg–1000 kg, comparable to many new plastic pallets. Due to differences in process, compression-molded recycled pallets typically weigh 15–22 kg.

Through continuous mold R&D investment, pallet designs produced by compression molding are now very close to injection-molded styles. This is one of the reasons ZK Hydraulic maintains a strong position in compression-molded plastic pallet technology.

In recent years, customers from Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Romania, and Mexico have visited our facilities and signed purchase agreements. This reflects confidence in the technology and manufacturing capability behind the system.

Compression Molding Equipment

Currently, we use:

  • 1600-ton press (ZK-P1600) for standard pallet sizes
  • 3000-ton hydraulic press (ZK-P3000) for oversized pallets

Because recycled plastic has lower flowability, the forming pressure must match the pallet dimensions. As a general guideline, at least 800 tons of working pressure per square meter of pallet area is required.

Extrusion and Material Preparation

We recommend a two-stage screw extrusion and plasticizing system with a screen-free filtration unit. This setup:

  • Fully melts mixed plastics (PP, PE, HDPE, etc.)
  • Releases moisture and trapped air
  • Filters out impurities and unmelted particles
  • Protects the mold

During melting, moisture generates fumes. Therefore, we install exhaust gas collection devices at the extruder vent to improve the working environment.

Metering System Improvements

Traditional metering systems often suffer from short lifespan and molten material leakage, which can even cause fire risks. With guidance from experienced engineers in Taiwan’s plastics industry, we redesigned the metering structure and resolved the leakage issue.

The Importance of the Mold

The mold determines pallet weight, structure, and load performance.

ZK Hydraulic develops both compression molds and injection molds. By adapting injection mold design concepts to compression technology, we achieved improvements in pallet appearance and structural strength.

Our compression molds use P20 steel, four-point material feeding, and are designed for long service life. Production efficiency can reach 15–20 pallets per minute under optimized conditions.

Plastic waste management remains a global challenge in both developing and developed countries. Recycling is not only an environmental responsibility — it can also be a commercially viable investment when supported by proper technology and system design.
